Athletic Workout Routines: Training Camp is Here!
Gooooooood morning everybody! It’s one of my most favorite holidays of the year! While Christmas is a close second, nothing quite compares to the morning TRAINING CAMP starts for the Green Bay Packers (and I suppose the NFL in general). If I don’t know you personally, allow me to introduce myself…I’m Megan, and I’m a Green Bay Packer fan — a big one. I know all the players, watch/listen to all the press conferences, rarely miss seeing a game, and can usually tell what’s going to happen in the next play once they’ve lined up…that kind of thing.
I’m a football information sponge, and training camp is one of my favorite times of year. Every football fan is excited about their favorite team, and what could happen in the upcoming season. I usually make an annual trip to Lambeau Field to watch a couple practices, take a tour of the field and just soak up the atmosphere. It’s my happy place, and if you’ve never been – even if you’re NOT a Packer fan — you should put that sucker on your bucket list. It’s essentially the Fenway of American Football, if you know what I mean 🙂
So what better way to celebrate on this morning of the Packers’ first training camp practice, than with a football drill workout?! Athletic workout routines are a great way to mix things up, and make your workout more FUN. If you’re a former, or current, athlete, it’s a great way to channel that energy and relive some of your glory days — or bring back nightmares of ladder drills — depending on your experience. If you’re not, or never were, an athlete, it’s an opportunity to move your body in a different way, and get a good calorie burn at the same time! You can access the workout (complete with drill descriptions) I’ve outlined in honor of today’s first training camp practice in Green Bay, below.
This is a workout you’ll need quite a bit of space to complete, as written. The recommended equipment below is simply that — recommended. Having the equipment will make it very easy to lay out, but don’t be afraid to get creative, and use whatever you have available to make it happen! However, I’ll be posting a series of these athletic workout routines, so you may want to consider investing if you’d like to incorporate this style of workout into your exercise regimen.
Athletic Workout Routines: Recommended Equipment
- Agility Ladder – This a great tool for developing speed, agility, coordination and focus. A number of drills can be done with this, and is an awesome way to get your heart rate up. This is the ladder I have, and it’s very reasonably priced, portable, and fun to use!
- Half Cone Markers – These are awesome for marking where you’re headed next. You can do any number of speed and agility drills and games with these little guys, for a very small investment.
- Gymboss Timer – This is a low cost must-have if you’re incorporating any type of HIIT into your routine. I use mine every single day. It tracks work/rest intervals, and functions as a stopwatch and clock as well – great for HIIT workouts, tabatas, and timing rest periods in between strength training sets. This will help you get the most out of your workouts!
